  • WHAT IS A SOLENOID VALVE? STRUCTURE, WORKING PRINCIPLE AND DETAILED CLASSIFICATION

    WHAT IS A SOLENOID VALVE?

A Solenoid Valve is an electromechanical device used to control the flow of fluids (liquid, gas, steam, oil) by using an electromagnetic coil.

👉 When الكهرباء is applied → the coil generates a magnetic field → pulls the plunger → the valve opens
👉 When power is removed → the spring returns → the valve closes

👉 Solenoid valves are essential components in industrial automation systems.

ROLE OF SOLENOID VALVES IN SYSTEMS

    Solenoid valves are used to:

    • Quickly open/close flow
    • Enable automatic control via PLC or timer
    • Direct or switch flow paths
    • Allow remote operation

👉 Thanks to their fast response and precision, they are widely used in automated systems.

    STRUCTURE OF A SOLENOID VALVE

A standard solenoid valve consists of:

    1. Body

    • Main housing for fluid flow
    • Materials: brass, stainless steel, plastic, carbon steel

    2. Solenoid Coil

    • Copper wire coil generating magnetic force
    • Voltage: 24V, 110V, 220V

    3. Plunger (Core)

    • Moves when energized
    • Controls valve opening/closing

    4. Spring

    • Returns valve to default position

    5. Seal

    • Materials: NBR, EPDM, PTFE
    • Prevents leakage

WORKING PRINCIPLE OF A SOLENOID VALVE

The operation is based on electromagnetic force:

    🔹 De-energized state:

    • Spring pushes plunger down
    • Valve remains closed (Normally Closed – NC)

    🔹 Energized state:

    • Coil creates magnetic field
    • Plunger is lifted
    • Flow path opens

    🔹 Power off:

    • Magnetic field disappears
    • Spring pushes plunger back
    • Valve closes

👉 This process occurs very quickly (milliseconds).

    TYPES OF SOLENOID VALVES

    1. Based on operating principle

    a. Direct Acting Solenoid Valve

    • Coil directly moves plunger
    • Suitable for low pressure, small flow

    b. Pilot Operated Solenoid Valve

    • Uses system pressure
    • Suitable for large flow, higher pressure

    c. Semi-direct Acting

    • Combination of both types

    2. Based on default state

    • Normally Closed (NC)
    • Normally Open (NO)

    3. Based on port configuration

    • 2/2 way (on/off)
    • 3/2 way (diverting)
    • 5/2 way (pneumatic systems)

    CLASSIFICATION BY APPLICATION (VERY IMPORTANT)
