Introduction to Austenitic Stainless Steel Pipes

Austenitic stainless steel pipes have a stable austenite structure, containing about 18% Chromium, 8–10% Nickel, and 0.1% Carbon. This group includes the widely known TP304 (18Cr-8Ni) and high Cr-Ni steels enhanced with Mo, Cu, Si, Nb, Ti for superior corrosion resistance.

    Key characteristics:

    • Non-magnetic
    • High plasticity and ductility
    • Excellent corrosion resistance
    • Strength can be improved via cold working
    • High machinability with S, Ca, Se, Te additions

Austenitic stainless steels are the most widely used stainless steel type due to their excellent corrosion resistance, formability, and versatility in industrial applications.

    Austenitic Stainless Steel Series: 200 & 300

    1. 200 Series:

    • Low Nickel, high Nitrogen content
    • Chromium-Nickel-Manganese austenitic steels
    • Grade 201: Hardenable by cold working
    • Grade 202: General-purpose stainless steel
    • Lower Ni and higher Mn reduces corrosion resistance

    2. 300 Series:

    • The most common Austenitic stainless steels
    • Grade 304: 18% Cr – 8% Ni, widely used in kitchenware, industrial equipment
    • Grade 316: 18% Cr – 10% Ni – Mo, “marine grade,” superior resistance to corrosion, used in chemical and food processing industries

Key Features of Austenitic Stainless Steel Pipes

    1. Corrosion Resistance:

    • Chromium content provides excellent corrosion resistance
    • Mo improves resistance to pitting corrosion
    • Nickel reduces corrosion rate, especially in acidic environments
    • For welding, low-carbon or stabilized grades (304L, 316L, 321) are recommended

    2. Formability:

    • Excellent stretch and deep drawing capability
    • Grades 201, 301 have high work-hardening rates
    • Higher Ni grades (304, 305) recommended for deep drawing

    3. Weldability:

    • Compatible with Shielded Fusion and Resistance Welding
    • Strong welded joints without preheating or post-weld annealing
    • Low-carbon grades prevent corrosion at welds

    4. Temperature Resistance:

    • Retains ductility and impact strength at cryogenic temperatures
    • Maintains tensile and creep strength at high temperatures
